October 7, 2023 began as an ordinary Saturday in Israel. By nightfall, it had become the deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust. Hamas launched a massive coordinated attack from Gaza, breaching the border fence in multiple locations and targeting kibbutzim, towns, and a music festival. Approximately 1,200 people were killed. Around 250 were taken hostage into Gaza.
The scale and brutality of the attack shocked the world. Israel declared a state of war and launched a military campaign in Gaza in response.
The Humanitarian Crisis
The months that followed brought devastating consequences for civilians in Gaza. International organizations documented severe food insecurity, mass displacement, and catastrophic infrastructure damage. The conflict drew intense global attention and sparked protests worldwide.
The Geopolitical Fallout
The war strained relationships between nations, divided college campuses, and became one of the most contested public conversations of 2023 and 2024. Ceasefire negotiations were complex and ongoing.
We hold the hope for peace and safety for all civilians — Israeli and Palestinian alike. Some crises demand that we simply acknowledge the weight of human suffering.
