The Unwritten Rules of the Hookah Circle

Pass it clockwise. Don't hold the hose. Don't double-dip. And for the love of all that is good — don't blow back.

Every social ritual has its etiquette, and hookah is no exception. If you're new to the culture, here's what the veterans want you to know.

Rule 1: Pass, Don't Hoard

Take your draw, enjoy it, and pass. The hose is not a microphone. You don't get to hold it while you tell a story.

Rule 2: Clockwise is Standard

Left to right, circle stays consistent. It's not a rule written anywhere, but everyone knows it.

Rule 3: No Blowing Back

Never blow air back through the hose into the hookah. You'll agitate the water, disturb the shisha, and earn the quiet disappointment of everyone in the circle.

Rule 4: Don't Double Dip the Tip

Personal tips exist for a reason. If you're sharing without disposable tips, keep track of which end is yours.

Rule 5: Appreciate the Setup

Someone — at Fuego, it's our staff — put thought into the coal placement, the pack, the water level. Acknowledge the craft.

Rule 6: Put Your Phone Down

At least for the first round. Be present. The posts can wait.

Follow these rules and you'll be welcomed into any hookah circle in the world.
